Alvaro Leiva wint Alexia-beurs
Alvaro Leiva, 36, from Madrid, Spain, has been awarded with the Alexia Grant, worth $15,000.
Alvaro Leiva has been with Panos Picture Agency since 2001 and has worked on stories in over 80 countries for a variety of newspapers, NGOs and magazines. He was a finalist for the W. Eugene Smith Grant in 2004 and again in 2006.
He has specialized on stories concerning the Amazon, Niger, Mekon, Ganges and Mississippi rivers which resulted in The River People exhibition of 100 photographs at the 2004 FotoFest in Houston, Texas, and in the book “Rio” in 2006. Other than a course in the Flash School of Photography in Madrid in 1986, he is self taught.

The judges narrowed the professional entries down from 230 to four this year before selecting Leiva for the grant. The others in the top four, in no particular order, are Dana Gluckstein from Los Angeles, Calif.; Jan Grarup from Holbaek, Denmark; and Larry Towell from Bothwell, Canada.
